Electrical Panel Upgrade in Detroit, MI
The panel is the one piece of the electrical system every circuit depends on. In a Detroit house it is often a 60-amp fuse box or a full 100-amp panel that was never meant for air conditioning, a car charger or a generator.
Typical Detroit range: $2,200 to $4,500 for a 200-amp service and panel. Fuse box to 100-amp breaker panel: $1,500 to $3,000.

How do you know you need an electrical panel upgrade?
Read the number on the main breaker or the main fuse block. That is the service size. Then look at what the house runs. A 100-amp service is fine for a gas-heated house with one air conditioner. It runs out fast once cooking, drying or driving goes electric.
- Screw-in fuses, or cartridge fuses in a pull-out block. A fuse box. Typically 60 amps, typically full.
- Tandem breakers everywhere. Two skinny breakers in one slot means someone has been squeezing circuits into a panel that is out of room.
- Rust, white powder or scorch marks. Water has been in the panel, or a connection has been arcing.
- A warm breaker or a hum. The breaker is not gripping the bus tightly. The damage is usually on the bus, which cannot be repaired.
- A recalled or orphaned brand. Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco panels have a long record of breakers that fail to trip. Inspectors and insurers flag both.
- An insurer's letter. Many carriers now ask for fuse boxes and certain old panels to be replaced before they will renew.
What happens during a panel upgrade?
- Load calculation and permit. The service is sized on paper, and the contractor pulls an electrical permit from BSEED.
- DTE disconnect. The utility cuts the drop at the house. Nothing above the meter can be worked on live.
- Service equipment. New mast, weatherhead and service cable sized for 200 amps, and a new meter socket. Brick is drilled and anchored, not nailed.
- The panel. The old box comes out, the new one is mounted, and each circuit is identified, landed on a correctly sized breaker and labeled.
- Grounding and bonding. Ground rods are driven outside, and the metal water service is bonded within a few feet of where it enters the basement.
- Inspection and reconnect. The city inspector approves the work, and DTE reattaches the drop and sets the meter.
Cables that are too short to reach the new panel are extended in a junction box, not stretched. Circuits found doubled up under one fuse get their own breakers. That sorting-out is where a careful panel change earns its price.
How much does an electrical panel upgrade cost in Detroit, MI?
The spread comes from the building. A meter on the driveway side with the panel directly behind it is a short day. A meter that has to move, a mast through a slate or tile roof, or a panel buried behind a finished basement wall all add hours. Arc-fault and ground-fault breakers, where the inspector requires them on altered circuits, cost several times what a plain breaker does.
| Job | Typical range | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Fuse box to 100-amp breaker panel | $1,500 – $3,000 | Panel, breakers, grounding, permit, existing service kept |
| 100-amp to 200-amp service and panel | $2,200 – $4,500 | Mast, service cable, meter socket, 200 amp panel, grounding, permit |
| Panel swap, same amperage | $1,400 – $2,600 | Replaces a failed or recalled panel on a sound service |
| Subpanel, 60 to 100 amps | $700 – $1,800 | Feeder, subpanel and breakers for a garage, addition or kitchen |
| Relocating the meter | $600 – $1,500 added | New socket location, longer service cable, wall repair at the old spot |
| One knob-and-tube circuit replaced | $600 – $1,500 | New grounded cable fished to the same outlets and lights |
Ranges are typical for the Detroit area, not quotes. The price for your building is confirmed before work starts.
Is a 100-amp panel enough, or do you need a 200 amp panel?
The price gap between 100 and 200 amps is smaller than people expect, because the labor is nearly the same and only the equipment and the service cable get bigger. Doing it twice is what costs money. If there is any chance of a charger or electric heat within ten years, go to 200 now.
| Factor | 60-amp fuse box | 100-amp breaker panel | 200 amp panel |

Does a new panel fix knob-and-tube wiring, and when is house rewiring needed?
Knob-and-tube went into Detroit houses from the 1890s into the 1930s. Two separate conductors, a hot and a neutral, run about a foot apart on porcelain knobs and pass through porcelain tubes in the joists. There is no ground. Districts built in that window, including Boston-Edison, Indian Village, Woodbridge, Corktown and much of the near west and east sides, still have plenty of it in service.
During a panel change each old circuit is tested before it is reconnected. The ones in good shape go onto 15-amp breakers, which is what the wire was built for. The ones that fail are left disconnected and quoted for replacement.
- How it is replaced. New cable is fished from the basement and the attic through the wall cavities. In a plaster and lath house the electrician cuts small holes at turns and behind fixtures, not channels down the walls.
- What it costs. One circuit runs $600 to $1,500. A whole-house rewire of a two-story prewar house typically runs $8,000 to $20,000, depending on size and how much of the plaster is original.
- What is not included. Plaster patching and painting are normally a separate trade. Ask before you sign.
- Staging it. Kitchen, bath and laundry circuits first, because they carry the heavy loads. Bedrooms and lighting later.
A new 200-amp panel is also the starting point for two other projects: EV charger installation in Detroit and whole-house generator installation. If the old panel is hot or smells right now, that is a call for an emergency electrician in Detroit. Every service is listed on the Detroit electrician home page.
What else do people ask about an electric panel upgrade in Detroit?
How long is the power off during a panel upgrade?
Usually four to eight hours on the day of the swap. Run the refrigerator cold the night before and keep its door shut. If someone in the house depends on powered medical equipment, say so when you book and the day is planned around it.
Does a new panel fix flickering lights?
Only if the cause was in the panel or the service, such as a loose neutral or a worn main. Flicker on one circuit usually comes from a loose splice or a failing switch on that run, which is a separate and smaller repair.
Can you replace the fuse box and keep the old wiring?
Yes, and it is the most common version of the job. Each existing circuit is tested, moved to a breaker sized for its wire, and labeled. Wiring that fails the test is left off and quoted separately.
Who schedules DTE for the disconnect?
The electrical contractor does. The utility disconnect and reconnect are booked around the permit and the inspection, which is why a panel upgrade is scheduled days or weeks ahead and is not a same-day job unless the panel has failed.
